Primary School Age

  • Difficulty orally blending sounds
  • Difficulty making the link between sounds and letters
  • Difficulty reading nonsense words and making expected progress with phonics
  • Difficulty retaining learning and needing lots of repetition
  • Difficulty maintaining concentration and seeming to lose focus or daydream
  • Spelling is overly phonetic and relies on how a word sounds. Irregular words such as 'said' are often misspelt
  • Written work is not reflective of the general verbal skills or understanding they show across the curriculum

Secondary School Age (in addition to the above)

  • Difficulty reading and writing at an expected speed for their age
  • Difficulty keeping up with the speed of teacher instruction
  • Difficulty transferring the ideas they have in their head to the page
  • Increased frustration with the reading and writing process
  • Impact on self-esteem and interest in reading and writing
  • Difficulty keeping up with the amount of reading and writing expected in lessons
  • Homework taking an excessive amount of time to complete
  • Exhaustion by the end of the school day
